What To Do

If you have some extra time, here are some ideas of what to do in the area.

Washington, DC – If you have never been, its worth going downtown to see at least the monuments, the White House and some of the Smithsonian Museums if you have time.  Walking around Georgetown and Dupont Circle neighborhoods is a great night time activity.  The Washington Post has a great visitors guide: here .

Alexandria, VA – just outside of Washington, but a little easier to drive  to Alexandriahas a historic downtown next to the Potomac river that offers great restaurants, quaint shops and Mount Vernon (George Washington’s home) is just 7 miles down the parkway.

If you would like to explore the area near Dulles airport and the wedding location:

Antiques, historic homes, wineries , hot air balloon rides, horseback riding, hiking opportunities are all in the area.

Leesburg – colonial market town with quaint shops nearby historic plantation homes too.

Middleburg – you will pass through Middleburg on the way Lockesly.  Another great town.

Harpers Ferry, WV – One of our favorite places!  Absolutely beautiful in the fall.  About an hour’s drive from the wedding location and an hour’s drive from the Fairfield Inn.  Harpers Ferry is a small historic town on a tiny peninsula in West Virginia where the Shenandoah river meets the Potomac River.  Maryland and Virginia are across the rivers.  Part of the town is National Park and costumed interpreters give talks on the famous abolitionist John Brown who staged a raid here, it’s Civil War History.  The Appalachian Trail runs right through town.  A walk up to Jefferson’s Rock is a must.  Those willing to hike up to Maryland Heights (about an hour) are afforded with the most spectacular view.

A couple of the bed and breakfast web sites had some great ideas and info on area attractions:

Directions

DIRECTIONS TO LOCKESLY MANOR
From Washington, DC/Arlington/Alexandria: (approximately 1 ½- 1 ¾ hour travel time depending on location)
Step 1) Take I-66 West. Take exit 57B for Rt. 50 west towards Fair Oaks/Winchester. At this point, Route 50 is named Lee-Jackson Memorial Highway.
Step 2) In about 22 miles you will pass through Middleburg. At some point, the name will change to Rt. 50/John Mosby Highway. After Middleburg, you will drive for about 17 more miles.
Step 3) After you cross the Shenandoah River, take a right at the second road, State Rt. 723/Millwood Road. There is a green sign that will point right towards “Millwood” and “Boyce” just before you turn on 723. Lockesly Manor is approximately one mile down on the right. The estate begins at the stone wall. Follow the wall until the double brick entrance. There was a flag out front the last time I drove by. There is a sign for Lockesly Manor, between the horseshoe driveway entrance and exits, but it is not facing toward the road (you will see it on the right if you pass the entrance!). You can see the house from the end of the drive. The veranda has tall white columns. If you enter the town of Millwood, you’ve gone too far. Drive up to the house and follow the signs to the left for the parking area.
