Silverlode 1908 Player Characters... Other Characters... |
Catherine MeyersDescription: Catherine is a very attractive young lady: 18 yrs old in 1908, 5'7", slender, and very conservatively attired. Very well educated (classical & occult), she is generally accepted as a laboratory assistant for her father. She is also talented at getting people to talk to her... about their research, life, and just about anything. But she's not inclined to push her charm/luck too much, so she keeps a low profile and never directly debates theories with other professors or students (though her 'innocent' questions have sparked heated debates amongst others). Her greatest area of interest is the study of rituals and occult objects. She very easily loses track of time and her surroundings during study and firmly believes that people are responsible for moving beyond study to application of knowledge for the greater good. Clichés: Demimondaine (4), Hermetic Magician (3), Model of Grace (3). Oberon: Magician's Finicky Feline Familiar (3), Mentalist (3). Languages: English, various occult languages (use Hermetic Magician). Hook: Loses track of time (does not pay adequate attention to her surroundings outside of the University and reputable/somewhat reputable occult shops). Equipment: Two books of working notes; two books of occult lore; collection of ritual implements and compounds; trunk for storage; conservative clothing; and a small amount of money left over from sale of house and household items. Lore: Healing and enchantment (mostly). She also studies spells that allow her to divine the nature of magical phenomena. Tale: Until recently, she resided in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, IL, where she was a laboratory assistant for her father at the University of Chicago and is widely read and knowledgeable in many studies not suitable for girls. Her father, Dr. Adam Myers, was a widower and encouraged her interests and provided access to books and materials. As Catherine grew, her and her father's working relationship also grew. For the past two years, she has worked in the Occultism department. Her father's studies, and therefore her own, focused on deciphering the intent of rituals and determining why a given ritual worked. After all, if one knows why/how a ritual worked, one can either duplicate it or find a way to block it. Unfortunately, Dr. Myers has recently passed away under mysterious circumstances leaving Catherine an orphan. His laboratory has been closed to all but a select group of professors. The house and most of its contents in Hyde Park have been sold to pay off debts. Catherine had one month to find some other means of support and a place to live. Fortunately, through the influence of some family friends, she received a scholarship to attend the Silverlode Institute of Science & Technology.
Demimondaine: How else would she have been permitted to work in the lab? Very good at getting her own way, mainly by convincing others (men) that it was their idea to begin with. Aware that others find her charming and quite willing to use it in her favor. Hermetic Magician: The laboratory was one for study of occult artifacts. Catherine has been translating occult languages since she was 14 and handling occult objects for at least that long. Can sort through the debris of objects claimed to be occult to find the one or two that actually are useful. Calm and methodical in ritual works. Unflappable in the face of strange events (after all, many rituals don't work quite as expected). Model of Grace: Always sure footed, casually walks through snow & ice without slipping. Recovers quickly even when jostled by others. Proper table manners are mandatory at all times and the ability to pour tea on a moving train is a given.
Oberon Description: Large (18 lb) cat, black of course, with yellow-orange eyes, very insightful in occult and normal world... with very sharp claws for anyone with ill intentions towards his mistress. Magician's Finicky Feline Familiar: Very sensitive to castings & objects that have been used/can be used to cast. Maybe more - after all, he's a cat and cats never tell more than necessary. Mentalist: Can drop thoughts into people's minds.
